We all know this feeling. It is the reason for many to fail again and again. Mostly without a forewarning, you feel like needing to jerk off or watch porn, right now. Withstanding this single urge without a proper technique is hard.
Put simply, urges are impulses to do something. For example, a smoker gets the strong urge to smoke multiple times a day. And while urges are formed in the brain, they sometimes go together with physical symptoms, like stiff shoulders or neck-tension. They want you to act like you did before in similar situations. Therefore, the chain smoker will get strong urges to smoke, while a non-smoker won’t.
The same pattern applies to compulsive masturbation or porn addiction. Your brain recognizes the fact of you either being in a certain mood (boredom e.g.) or place and consequence: watching porn. Neurotransmitters then send the impulse to act like you did before, and you ultimately will end up relapsing.
As you may already realized, this also means that if you change your response to being in a certain mood or place, your urges will change too. Someone using his room for studying only will experience different urges than someone who uses it to watch porn solely. Another important factor coming to urges is that they need to be “fed”. Otherwise, they are going to disappear after a few minutes. Thinking about the urge or staying where your urges arise feeds it, and the urge grows stronger. Sometimes, so strong for you to give in.

Instead, compare it to a huge, powerful wave, which is dangerous if you swim towards it. But if you get out of the water just when you see the wave, you will be safe. This is way easier said than done, so here are 2 simple steps that will help you get out of the water fast enough!
Step 1: Move!
Stand up, go to another room, or step outside. Physically changing your space disrupts the thought patterns and triggers associated with the urge. By working out (even if that means just doing some push-ups) or going outside, your mood is going to change too.
Step 2: Use the 5-5-5 Breathing Technique
Deeply inhale for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, exhale for 5 seconds. This calms you down and helps to regain control of your thoughts. The major advantage of this strategy is that it can be applied everywhere, every time.
These two simple steps take less than one minute to perform, yet are very powerful. Instead of relapsing; go outside, breathe fresh air, work out, and the urge will disappear soon. Additionally, moving, especially outdoors, benefits your skin and overall health, so you will win twice!
Reading this again and again will make it easier to implement immediately as the urge appears. Also, please share this article with someone you want to help in overcoming his urges, no matter which ones.
Now, there is another thing I ask you for. I partnered up with an NTU (Nottingham University, GB) Clinical Psychologist and Researcher, who is currently conducting a scientific study on porn usage. Participating in the online survey only takes around five minutes, and you have the chance to win an Amazon Voucher code.

We all have been there unfortunately, but we can all get out of there
