Idenfifying Triggers
Every single visit to a porn site is caused by you getting triggerd. Knowing your triggers therefore is a neccesary step on the road to recovery.
Picture this;
you are laying in bed, doom-scrolling through social media when suddenly massive urges hit you. Weak as you are, you give in, watch porn, and jerk off. Depressed and ashamed you sit down and ask yourself how this could happen again.
If this scenario seems somewhat realistic to you, the following article is a must-read! Learn how to avoid relapsing by consequently eliminating the root cause behind your PMO addiction. Triggers.
What are triggers?
Everybody knows this unique childhood scent. The moment you smell it, a wave of calm washes over you, and your mind fills with images of serene, joyful times spent outdoors with friends. In this case, the trigger clearly is the unique scent, leading to a mental reaction (remembering) followed by dopamine hits (the memory makes you calm and happy). Coming to porn or masturbation addiction, identifying triggers can be a lot harder. Triggers are not a certain smell, but rather underlying behaviors we mostly do not even realize.
Figure the triggers out on your on by the following definition. In general, a trigger is something perceived by one or more of our five senses, leading to a certain reaction.
Trigger-chains
Call me crazy, but I bet that at least 50% of the time you watch porn or masturbate is because you are bored. Read that sentence again. Again.
If this isn’t the case for you, I wouldn’t like to be in your position, as free time must be very scarce. However, for most guys with an addiction, this description is quite accurate. Boredom is the root cause of masturbating and watching porn. Porn is a massive part of the procrastination problem (but more to that in another article).
Here is an oversimplified boredom trigger-chain:
1. You are in your room, bored and alone
2. Social Media seems to be the rescue!
3. You end up doom-scrolling, until-
4. A beautiful woman, scarcely dressed appears
4.5 Because the lines between the digital and the real world blurr, this appeals you
5. You go on the hub and masturbate
6. You cum
7. What has just happened?
Now, I can tell you, by opening on Social Media a trigger chain started and boredom led to yet another relapse. Now, fortunately, we just identified this very popular trigger chain, that also got me for a while. However nowadays, even on “boring“ days, I am not even tempted.
The main reason for your relapse is that triggers are seemingly everywhere. Or, as an expert wrote:
“Porn triggers are all around us. We live in a hyper-sexualized society.“
Therefore, escaping them is hard. However you are able to do so by next week if you just do two things. Use the input you gained and start identifying what triggers you. keep an eye on yourself for the next week, as this process takes some time. but, it is worth it. Then open the following article I will publish next saturday to learn how to destroy the triggers you then will have identified already.
