This article can be unsettling for some and a well-needed wake-up call for others. It scientifically disproves the widespread myth that porn not only has a measurable impact on your brain's behavior. But that, under certain circumstances, porn will leave its imprint for one's whole life.
Porn affects your brain
Frequent pornography consumption has been linked to decreased gray matter volume in the striatum, a brain region associated with motivation and decision-making, for a long time. This reduction most importantly means diminished responsiveness to rewards of any kind. In other words, by watching pornography, you are frying the brain's reward center, part of which is also important for decision-making.
It therefore should surprise nobody that a recent study found porn addicts to not only score weaker on decision-making but also overall motivation and experienced pleasure in response to a reward. In order to experience the above you do not need to be addicted for, as consuming pornography on a somewhat regular basis is enough to see these results.
Neurons that fire together, wire together.
As I proposed in an earlier episode, you should imagine your brain as a complicated railway network. The more traffic there is on one line, the more new tracks will be built while the existing ones are maintained simultaneously. A railroad less frequently taken can manage the little activity running on it by itself, while an abandoned railroad starts to rust before eventually getting overgrown by plants. You can use this railroad metaphor for learning a new language as well as for your porn habit. An addict's tracks are strong and ever-growing, while one who does not watch porn is unable to run a train from one neuron to the other one on the porn track.
This system of neurological networks was proven by an uncountable number of studies. There even is one scientific paper that even explicitly finds that habitual pornography use alters neural structures. Particularly affecting the frontostriatal network, which - again - plays a role in impulse control, decision-making, and reward processing.
Porn leaves its mark forever
Quitting porn is vital. And one who does not watch porn anymore will experience a ton of benefits. Yet, even if rusted and overgrown, the tracks still exist.
Some areas altered by porn consumption are temporary. Depending on frequency, duration, and other, more individual factors, other changes will stay forever. What sounds like bad news for people considering themselves addicted to pornography really should serve as another reason to quit immediately.
A smoker quitting after decades is not going to get his perfect lung back. But, compared to the one who never stops, still is less likely to suffer from smoke-related diseases. The same goes for pornography. The body's recovery is an amazing, sheer, unbelievable process. You should try it out by simply quitting porn today. Forever. Your brain will thank yourself later.
Next week, there will be an article on Gen Z, so stay tuned! Until then, and do not relapse!
