Touch some Grass (pt. I)
On curiousity, goals, focus, distractions or how to get your soul back.
This article was completely unplanned. It is part one of a two-series episode. The follow-up article will be published upcoming Saturday. To give you a short backstory; I currently focus on myself entirely, which also means using as little technology as possible. No gaming, no social media, no porn, no jerking off, but working, hitting the gym, and going outside every day. Just me and my dreams. So far, so boring. Now, let me ask you something.
When was the last time you stood still and let the bee, summing around you, actually land? When was the last time you picked up a nice-looking stone or leaf? Or, when was the last time you did something creative? The last time you got outside without your phone in reach? It has probably been a while.
I am not sitting down at 7 p.m, writing this to brag about how nice I am and how naturepilled you should be. Yet, I think reading and understanding the following makes your journey of quitting porn and masturbation much easier.
The child and the lizard
Today, I saw what curiosity means. Sitting down in a local park, a child, asking their grandmother for a flashlight, caught my attention. The sun was out—there was no reason for it, or so it seemed. Given the phone flashlight, the child rushed away to a small pile of stones. After crawling around it and inspecting the utterly unspectacular heap for what has to be half an hour, the child suddenly squeaked. Heading to its grandmother for yet another time, this time with little, careful steps, the child opened its hands. It managed to catch a lizard with its bare hands. The reptile, seeing its chance, flees immediately as the hands open, but the child does not care. It managed to catch a lizard with its bare hands!
Why am I recalling this seemingly irrelevant, everyday story? Put simply, because it is not irrelevant.
This little child proved to have more endurance and willpower than most young men, or adults in general. To be fully indulged in a single objective, be it catching a lizard or building a business, is one of the most trance-like states of mind. Focussing on this sole objective and not giving up were both necessary for the child to succeed. Yet most of us lack those abilities, especially in combination. The major difference, however, is that the child plays for fun, while we play for freedom.
Even though its siblings played catch, the child also did not get distracted. Most of us are in an endless loop of distractions. How can you catch a lizard when you get constant notifications? Right, you are unable to. But do you even want to?
Distraction & Curiosity
“Evil is, whatever distracts.” ~F. Kafka
Porn plays a major role in this, too, fogging your thoughts even after watching. But, and proclaiming anything else would be just foul, it is not the only source of distraction, killer of creativity, ambition and dreams. Social media probably is even bigger in that respect. For many, quitting pornography is desired, but quitting Instagram or Facebook is not. Yet, I highly recommend at least trying to go a while without it.
You need to let go, before you can grow! That is why I wrote a seperate article on how to pause social media consumption. Read the linked article if you do not know where to start. A short break can clear your mind and re-awake the beast within you. It indeed is hard, but the only way to live up to your potential.
Unfortunately, we also lost our ability to wonder. To be curious. Many are scared of their own thoughts nowadays. Where did we go wrong? I am not saying to be childish when you are a grown man. Please do not roll over the floor, trying to catch a reptile. But wonder. Be curious, and pursue something with laser focus. Dream big. If you are reading this, you are old enough to make it happen!
