Touch-some-grass-ll
On relearning to be creative, creating something unique and how porn kills love.
Last week I told you the tale of a curious child and a lizard, talked about why most modern lifes lack - well, life and the evil of distractions. And like I said in the previous episode, both articles were written in a single session when my muse was high on that days experience. Here is the second and last part of the “Touch some Grass” series. Enjoy!
(Un)learning Creativity
[…] And, there is another thing we can learn from children, or rather relearn, as we already had this ability when we were younger. I am not saying this in a way single moms in their midlife crisis do, but as a teen who was there myself. It is my utmost conviction that the internet, mobile phones, gaming, and porn robbed us of our most important asset. Creativity. I remember being called creative by many adults but also same-aged friends when I was a child. And even today, in a rare moment, this creativity shines through. Like, for example, when writing an article like this one.
Video games, but especially social media and pornography, do not require creativity at all. Scrolling through an endless feed or typing-in the name of an actress in the hub’s search bar is as far away from creativity as you can get. Unfortunately, exactly these things make up a large share of an average teenagers day. You unlearn to be creative. The flood of distractions and constant stimulation numbs your mind and extinguishs the inner flame of creativity.
How do you relearn it? Honestly, I am figuring this out for myself currently. But less of the above, meaning porn, social media and gaming and instead more going out, reading, writing, and drawing are going to spark creativity for sure. In case you did not do it yet, I strongly recommend a digital detox.
Designed to be consumers
What I found really helpful is:
Try to be a creator for once.
Most people are consumers. We live in a consumerist society, yet many own nothing. I could write a seperate article on this modern Paradoxon, however the important message is the following. They never produce anything unique. Anyone can fill out some Excel sheets at work, but not everyone can make music, a shoe, paint on canvas… What did you produce that will outlive you? What stays when you are gone? That is the main question thriving me.
Writing articles like these is one way to express my deep desire to be a creator. Also, I am not too bad at drawin or sketching. Both have the nice side-effect of strengthening my creativity. Everyone needs to decide which team he is on, and I am a creator in that respect. What about you?
Who cares?
Also, stop thinking about what other people might think of you. For sure, I do not mean stop listening to the helpful advice of your friends or even parents, but to ignore the potential thoughts strangers could have on you. You realize how abstract that even sounds. Because in general, most people do not care at all.
You could run through a shopping mall, topless and screaming, yet people would just go on with their day. Two days later, no one would even remember. Chances are, you do not even want to do that, but are just thinking about getting a new pair of shoes or a different haircut. Just do it.
This was a slightly more abstract article, but I truly regard this as one of the most important ones anyway. Chances are you understood and even related to it entirely. Or, you did not understand a thing. In this case, I urge you to read it again.
No matter what you thought of it, feel free to leave a comment. It is valuable feeback for me. Last but not least, do not forget to share this post with your friend or accountability partner. Reminder: I am working on a reward for active readers.
Until next week, and stay clean!
I liked the message you gave in this post, so simple yet so misunderstood.
Great job; you deserve it👍.
No big deal, we all have a live to live 👍
